Following our standard introduction of new members and a reminder that the August meeting would be cancelled and that the KOTESOL International Conference would be held the last weekend of October, the members began sharing their expertise. National KOTESOL’s First Vice President Tim Dalby who was visiting us, presented a variety of technological news, programs, websites and ideas for incorporating them all in the classroom, including www.ning.com and www.kotsol.org/chapter resources. Sef Kerwin highlighted the benefits of the Linux operating system, including its price—free—as well as its flexibility which allows it to understand many shared programs and its ability to run as the sole operating system or in tandem with an existing operating system. Michael Raymond also introduced Second Life as a novel environment where many students are already congregating. Benefits of Second Life include the number of people already familiar with it, its international renown, and the wealth of instructional aids, such as Moodle, which already have a presence there, Following these presentations, attendees were introduced to a variety of websites with uses in the classroom. Kirsty Clausen outlined the particular uses of phonetics in classrooms ranging from groups of young learners to college students and introduced sites such as www.shiporsheep.com, www.cambridgeenglishonline.com (choose “phonetics fun”), and the sounds of English available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/. Paedar Callaghan introduced www.ted.com in which 18-minute speeches from the top thinkers in the world are routinely recorded and made available free and in transcript form as well. Www.ello.com was presented by Sara Davila in addition to a way to Google more limited areas by typing google <<search term>> site:<<url>> in the search line of Google (the only punctuation in the line should be the colon). Finally, www.nationalgeographic.com was introduced by Elizabeth-Anne Kim and www.prezi.com and www.jingproject.com by Sherry Seymour. The next meeting of the group will be September 5, 2009. |
