| Elizabethanne Kim Posts: 24 | April 2009 Workshop Summary Daegu Kotesol Chapter Meeting April 4, 2009 Sara Davila “Task-Based Learning: Low Budget, No Budget, Low Prep” Following the president’s standard series of announcements and introduction of visitors, Sara Davila engaged the forty-five attendees of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Chapter’s April Workshop in a task-based learning (TBL) session to show the ways in which the concepts of TBL can be readily applied to the materials and situations most language teachers face every day. TBL is learning in which students work together to complete an item of work using English as a tool to communicate and generally consists of three steps: The pretask stage provides a short language introduction or review. The task stage allots students the opportunity to communicate in English to accomplish their goal. The post-task stage affords students the opportunity to present and/or reflect on their work. Adhering to the mantra, “Don’t work harder than your students,” Ms. Davila explained how incorporating TBL to already existing contexts can help make the teacher more patient, because they are not overtired or over-invested in elaborate materials, and more learner-centered. She suggested rethinking the class and taking stock of what was already available. Then, pare everything down to the essentials. Students can bring notebooks and create portfolios, which they maintain. From these materials, students can produce and keep all of the other materials needed for class. Ms. Davila then suggested several activities conducive to TBL, including information gap activities, interviews, bar and line graphs of responses, Vin diagrams. Bingo, and card games in which the students have created the cards. In assessing these activities, Ms. Davila gives students a score from 0-5 based upon their ability to exhibit the following observable behaviors during each class: talking to others, giving new ideas, helping others, actively listening, asking questions, and taking notes. The next chapter workshop will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009, during which Holly and Danny Marland will present on "Finding Focus for Less-than-motivated Learners."
