January Workshop Summary
Daegu Kotesol Chapter Meeting
January 3, 2009
Dr. Boon-joo Park
“Rewriting Strategy for English Composition Classes”

On a dreary January afternoon, Dr. Boon-joo Park treated the approximately attendees present at the Daegu Kotesol Chapter meeting to the hope in a less-work-intensive method of process writing.

Faced with teaching a seminar in writing, Dr. Park’s research on writing revealed that the various methods of writing feedback currently employed by writing teachers—direct and indirect feedback—require a great deal of the teacher’s time and effort and often produce questionable or less-than-stellar results. Therefore, Dr. Park began searching for a new way to teach writing and administer process writing in her classes.

She employs a strategy in which students write a first draft which is then collected. Then, after a brief period, perhaps one class meeting or one week, the students are given the same assignment again but are not given their previous drafts. Dr. Park wanted to measure whether or not students corrected their own mistakes. Dr. Park measured syntactic-level as well as word-level errors. She found that the rewritten assignments were longer than the original assignments and while the overall number of syntactic-level and word-level errors increased, the overall rate of errors per total number of sentences and words, respectively, decreased or remained the same.

The attendees then adjourned and enjoyed their semi-annual chapter dinner at a local galbi restaurant. The next chapter workshop will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, during which Dion Clingwall will present “Drama Activities for Successful Dialogue in the English Classroom.”
