Examining the TEE policy and its Application  in the Korean classroom context

With the implication of TEE policy, many Korean English teachers are pressured to carry out English classes only in English. This policy had hoped that the English education in Korea will lead the students to be more competent in English language. However, this has only led to wrong expectations and misunderstandings of how TEE needs to be carried out. 

This presentation will first diagnose the problems that came with the TEE policy implementation and attempt to understand the source of these problems.  It will then be followed by reflecting who we are teaching and how TEE policy can be applied most effectively in the Korean classroom context.

Grace Hwang has been involved in the Korean ELT field for 5 years as an English teacher-trainer, coordinator, and language instructor. Currently working as a Microteaching instructor at Gyeonggi-do Institute of Foreign Language Education, she holds an M.Sc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford.  

Her research interests include examining and defining the relationship between the mother tongue use (L1) and English and evaluating the role L1 plays when teaching English; the effect of Korean English teacher’s input and delivery on Korean students’ process in learning English.

The key for the better and fun English class can be the "know-how" of how to compose the communicative activities. While the students are using the language as a tool to communicate meaningfully, they can get the 4 skills more efficiently. The presenter categorized the types of the communicative activities that were already used in the real class of the presenter. In addition, the students in Jangsung Middle School are experiencing the process writing now. As you know, writing cannot be done without proper steps. The students are following the steps for writing a paragraph based on the process writing. The presenter shares the experience of the classes.
