Presentation 1
Cultural effects: A learner-centered approach to understanding L1 culture and its effects on SLA Kevin Dieter
Originally from a small suburb outside of Chicago , Kevin first arrived in S. Korea during the summer of 1994. Since the year 2000, Kevin has been working as a full-time instructor at Gwangju Health College , Department of Tourism English. He is currently doing his graduate school research at Chonnam National University , Department of Education.
Abstract:
The following presentation will address issues of culture and its affects on second language acquisition ( SLA ). The subject of culture and its role in second language education has been dealt with since the beginning of this science. However, many of the early studies in SLA were conducted in an ESL learning environment. Therefore, the culture of the target language was the focus in most early discussions. As EFL teachers, we are faced with a unique environment where the culture of the target language is not the most influential factor. In fact, it is the learners native culture that has a greater impact on their ability to acquire the target language. Hopefully by addressing this topic teachers can gain a deeper learner-centered perspective in their classrooms.
Presentation 2:
Technology in the Classroom: Preparation, Pedagogy, and Practice Maria Lisak
Maria is celebrating 11 years of teaching in a variety of classroom environments. She holds a CELTA, MBA and is currently working on her MSED at Indiana University in Instructional Systems Technology. Currently working at CNU English Language and Literature Dept, she also commits time and energy to volunteer for GIC and KOTESOL. Maria is excited to come to Mokpo for a KOTESOL Outreach Workshop.
Abstract:
Technology enhanced learning environments (TELE) can be a divisive issue for institutions, teachers, and learners. What types of technology assist learning and what is just edutainment? This presentation informs attendees about TELE, introduces case studies of TELE prototyping using instructional technology principles. and shares tips and guidelines for incorporating technology in pedagologically sound ways to the learning process.

Presentation Abstract
Reading Fluency. "Developing Second and Foreign Language Reading Fluency and Its Effects on Comprehension: A Missing Link" is an article written by Etsuo Taguchi, et al. This paper boosted my interests to pursue my research project on interactive novel-based reading, even though it is quite different from my perspective, with respect to the notion of reading fluency.
I would briefly talk about the gist of the issues mentioned in the paper and discuss the importance of interactive reading - what happens while reading or after reading? How should language educators help L2/FL learners to make the reading meaningful to them and utilize them in communication? How could language teachers connect reading and communication in the classroom? Is it enough to let our students read? Is it enough to provide them with some vocabulary items to look up in the dictionary and use them to construct a number of sentences? Is it enough to provide them questions to answer or let them report about what they read? There are many activities we can think of, but are they enough? Do we see the effectiveness of these procedures?

Welcome to the Gwangju-Jeonnam KOTESOL Homepage.

Operation: Outreach Jeonnam

GJ Chapter would like you to propose new ways we can reach the Jeonnam community. What can GJ KOTESOL do for your community? KTT, a KOTESOL committee for KOTESOL Teacher Training, has funds to support two presenters to come to Jeonnam Province to give a workshop. KOTESOL SIGs also have facilitators who are willing to come to Jeonnam to present to Korean teachers. Our Young Learners SIG led by Jason Renshaw is one example. Check out the SIG web sites for their mission statements. Would you be interested in having KTT or a SIG representative come to your school or institution and give a workshop or presentation? Make GJ KOTESOL reach the community through your vision. Let us know your ideas on how to make our Outreach Program a success.

Our Demographics as a Chapter

KOTESOL members usually fall into two categories: those who are active at the chapter level and those who only join for a discount on the International Conference in October. You have paid your fees. Do you feel you are getting your money's worth?

A Place for Everyone

Gwangju-Jeonnam is a unique and colorful community. GJ KOTESOL welcomes all members of the EFL community into its organization. Whether you work at a hagwon and it's your first time teaching or you are a Korean teacher coping with bureaucratic objectives on using English in your middle school classroom, we have a network to help you in your personal and professional needs.

Shape GJ KOTESOL in Your Vision

Our monthly workshops usually have about 30-50 people present. KOTESOL members, GICers and visitors come to our Gwangju workshops which take place at different venues around Gwangju. We would like to continue these Gwangju workshops as cultural networking parties. What topics or themes would you like to hear about? Let us know.
