The Development of a “Fun English” Program — A Cognitive Perspective
This study presents the “Fun English” program which is done using methods involving a
cognitive perspective by explaining how language learning in SLA occurs in authentic situations
in the classroom, with inner-cultural games and improvement of reading skills. This research fo-
cused more on children’s incidental language learning rather than intentional learning through
interactive classroom design. The purpose of this paper is to show that the “Fun English” pro-
gram is a valuable, applicable and useful tool for helping Korean English learners by lowering
affective filters (Krashen 1982). This study will describe the program in detail. The program is
divided into three different sections using different materials and we will discuss how they are
integrated with each other for comprehensive input, monitoring, and maintenance of learners’
self-confidence.

The Use of Newspapers and Magazine Articles as Source Materials in Upper Level Discussion
Classes
Jonathan Brenner instructs a class in newspaper and magazine reading and discussion at
the Language Education Center. In this class, he has a variety of roles, instructor, moderator, fa-
cilitator, and at times dictionary. There are many different ways to hold a class of this kind, and
this presentation will introduce different methods to engage upper level students in reading, dis-
cussion, and debate. This presentation will also offer ways to adapt authentic materials to in-
struct upper intermediate and advanced students.
Jonathan Brenner graduated from Virginia Tech in the USA with degrees in History and Politi-
cal Science in 2000. Upon graduating, he entered postgraduate school at the University of Dur-
ham in the UK pursuing a degree in International Boundaries, a study that combines geography
and international law to research the causes and settlements of boundary and territory disputes.
From this program, Jonathan became interested in the politics and cultures of East Asia. He
came to Korea in July 2002 and after spending a year in Seoul, came south to Jeol-
lanamdo, taking up jobs first in Yeosu and then Gwangju. Since February 2005, Jonathan has
been working at the Language Education Center of Chonnam National University instructing in
a variety of programs. He is happily married to Diane Syejeong Kim and looks forward to con-
tinued happiness in Gwangju.
